The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
